Charges Against Notorious Murderer Srey Sina Intensified, No Pardon in Sight

Phnom Penh, June 27, 2024 – The charges against the notorious murderer Srey Sina, whose case has captivated public attention across Cambodia, have been expanded. The Minister of Justice vows to ensure that this infamous criminal will never receive a pardon.

During a press conference on June 26 at the Ministry of Justice, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice Koeut Rith provided an update on the case.

Srey Sina escalated a minor dispute between two neighbors into a violent tragedy, resulting in the deaths of a couple and causing injuries and fear among others present.

According to Minister Koeut Rith, Srey Sina faces charges of murder under Article 199 of the Criminal Code, which carries a prison sentence of 10 to 15 years. He is additionally charged with attempted murder, also under Articles 27 and 199, subjecting him to another potential 10 to 15 years. Moreover, he is accused of the illegal use of firearms under Article 20 of the Law on the Management of Weapons, Explosives, and Ammunition, which could lead to an additional 6 months to 2 years in prison.

Minister Koeut Rith commended the Phnom Penh Municipal Court for its diligent handling of the proceedings. He announced his intention to advocate for the inclusion of Srey Sina on a list of severe offenders who are ineligible for pardon, underscoring the severity of the crimes committed.
